Service Learning Projects have been a huge part of Franklin Preschool and our ability to connect within the Mattoon community. Some of our service learning projects have been:
Collecting pennies in our annual “Penny War” to help a person or organization in need.
Collecting items for the One Stop Community Christmas Event.
Making cards for nursing home residents.
Organizing a sock drive for our local homeless shelter.
Making a recycled bench from student and community collected bottle caps that was donated to Douglas Hart.
Our students are learning that their actions affect others and that they can contribute positively within the community. The students vote on a Fall and Spring Service Learning Project. Through advertising our projects, we receive support from other schools, as well as other community members
.
Penny Wars
Our Spring Service-Learning Project is a Penny War. Students vote between two different choices on which community organization will receive the funds. Students love bringing in pennies and feeling like they are making a difference. We keep track of which pod has brought in the most money. However, in the spirit of “Thinking Win-Win”, all students earn an ice cream party for their participation.
