Mattoon Middle School

Updated: Nov 10, 2023

With input from our student body and staff, our Student Culture LEAD team designs, creates, and maintains a physical environment that reflects the highly effective practices of the 7 Habits and honors each member of our MMS community. The committee's functions stretch beyond the mere physical additions to the school as the group ensures that all students have opportunities to add their individuality in the school building. This fosters a profound sense of attachment and engagement and promotes student ownership of the school. Students' worth and potential are reflected in prominent displays of student work and celebrations of who they are as learners and leaders. New students “Make A Mark” in our cafeteria by adding to our MMS Tree. Students also decorate the ceiling tiles and determine the inspiring messages found throughout our building. These features are often selected as a highlight of our building when our students plan and facilitate building tours. With each passing year, this involvement deepens, thanks to opportunities like the Green & Gold Service Day, where students collectively strive to improve our school's environment. Through these endeavors, the school is not only transformed physically but also becomes a living testament to the spirit of collaborative growth and continuous improvement.

Paradigms & school-wide WIGS are posted in our main conference area where we host IEP meetings, parent meetings, team collaboration, and more, as a reminder of our End In Mind. The communication of our school-wide goals, paradigms, and mission statements is essential for providing direction, fostering unity, promoting student engagement, ensuring accountability, enhancing communication, and facilitating ownership. These statements serve as our foundation and allow us to provide an opportunity for all stakeholders to be an active part of our school community.
