The Language of Leadership: Whether it’s in the hallways overhearing teachers talking, or in the office with our wonderful secretaries at MHS, you will hear leadership language. Staff share professional WIGS and hold each other accountable.

Teachable moments happen in all areas of the building. During homecoming, every club/activity is highlighted with a representative. Clifton strengths are utilized to help students learn self worth and potential.

Staff Trust: Last year, staff spent a faculty meeting revisiting the 13 behaviors of trust. Students recently highlighted, throughout 5 Essentials data and site visits, the amount of high trust teachers give them in leadership roles. At MHS we use our Panorama data to grow, measure, and create lasting growth in SEL competencies.

Student Trust: Our students are very vulnerable in their writing, sharing much of their own history. Around the building, you can see that students trust their belongings to be safe. Students are empowered to create action teams (Wellness Team, Food for Thought, Student Engagement, Hurricane Ian, and many more), practice using talents, LHT utilizes all kinds of strengths, counseling resources available and utilized, students have a trusted adult, Many clubs have taken time to be door greeters in the morning. Students also recognized the importance of student belonging, so they led the initiative to greet people by name throughout the building and highlight Wave Times to ensure all students feel a sense of belonging at Mattoon High School.
