Systems and routines are put in place throughout the building where students are given opportunities to use their voice and choice to enhance the school community, Mattoon community, and surrounding communities. Our students have the opportunity to create initiatives, projects, and leadership events as desired. For example, our most recent success has been the Student Lighthouse Team Market Days where students created their own products and sold them to the school community. With the money raised, the students chose to donate their money to a children’s hospital. The students contacted the hospital to inquire about the hospital needs and wants in order to purchase items to help comfort sick children. Students made the purchases and shipped them to the Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis.

A trio of students noticed that only some had the opportunity to purchase a Riddle Elementary t-shirt. They created a proposal to the Riddle PTO asking for a sponsorship to provide each student with a school shirt at no charge. The team oversaw a t-shirt design contest and chose a student-created design. After production, the team distributed the shirts to students.
