4.2 Leadership Roles

Updated: Nov 10, 2023

Leadership roles at MMS are constantly evolving based on school needs and student ideas, interests, and strengths. While students apply for some established school-wide roles such as Year Book, Mass Media, Student Council, and the Lighthouse team, many others are more fluid. Classroom leadership roles, such as answering the phone, preparing classroom PAWS, taking attendance, or helping a substitute teacher, are offered across grade levels and vary from class to class. Students are also encouraged to suggest additional leadership roles as needed. At the start of the 22-23 school year, a group of students identified a need for student tutors and we now have a group of students that tutor other 6th graders during lunch recess. And, recognizing the challenges that lockers often present for our incoming 6th graders, students from several of our 7th and 8th-grade advisory classes set up times to help students learn how to use a combination lock. Leadership roles have also expanded as students take a more active role in all of our events.

During the spring of 2023, members of our Student Council honed their leadership skills by attending a Leadership Conference and sharing highlights from the year with our school board.

As students have taken over the responsibilities of planning and leading school assemblies, additional leadership roles have developed. Students also worked to bring back the return of school-wide assemblies following Covid. Now, students are responsible for not only creating the outline and script of our assemblies but also serve as Masters of Ceremonies at the events. At our end of the school year assembly, our students honored those retiring from MMS.
