6.3 - Empowering Instruction

At MMS, we believe the best way to foster growth and development in students is to allow them to take the reins of their own education. Every student is viewed as a leader in their journey of learning. Throughout the academic year, students have the opportunity to steer their education within specific competencies. No longer confined to a one-size-fits-all approach, each student can explore subjects that truly resonate with them. Central to this approach is our dedicated staff. This paradigm shift transforms classrooms into hubs of collaboration, exploration, and innovation.

Inside these dynamic classrooms, student-led activities blossom. Students evolve into creators, designing projects (such as coding a light display for our Wildcat Winter Wonderland event), leading discussions, and steering group initiatives. Students are encouraged to share ideas and propose change.

A prime example of this empowerment can be witnessed during our D.E.N. classes. Here students are not just recipients of lessons; they are co-learners creating an environment of mutual learning. One of the most exciting shifts within the educational landscape at MMS is our incorporation of the 4 Shifts framework. This strategy encompasses four crucial aspects: Authentic Learning, Deeper Learning, Student Agency, and Technology Integration.

With authentic learning, students are no longer memorizing facts for a test; they are applying their knowledge to real-world problems, fostering a deep and lasting understanding. Technology integration enhances their learning experience. For example, a group of students worked in Mass Media class to use digital technologies to enhance broadcasting and publications. These students then presented their projects at the Illinois Technology Student Agency Day in Springfield to legislators to advocate for more funding for technology in classrooms. And, students in Industrial Technology and STEAM class partnered with Amazon Engineers to expand learning beyond the classroom walls.
